Advocacy has been my passion since I was first elected as the only female President of my high school class in 1974. I was asked to campaign then and 40 years later, I was asked to campaign for Windham County Senate.
The time in between advocating from everything from a standard housing policy at the University of Vermont which I won by calling in the media attention to, to continuing providing a woodworking program at a local high school for students who needed a trade and would not go on to college, I've been winning on important issues
whenever I speak.
I became a President of a local Tenants Organization which made progress in creating a community garden, publishing its first ever news letter, to changing housing policies and creating a neighborhood watch program. These tools for healthier living in Windham County helped over 40 families and their children to thrive.
I helped to facilitate a major shift and policy change at our local school district that mandated compliance with the national mileage reimbursement rate for para educators and teachers who were transporting students to local area job sites. Previous to that they were being paid far less than the federal guidelines for reimbursement.
I have changed the way people think of voting. For one, I got in the campaign. People think it is difficult to get on the ballot and if more people understood the process, more people would get involved.
I helped the Austine School for the Deaf get recognition at the town level at Town Meeting to ask for additional financial help for their students and was able to earn the respect of the Deaf Community for doing that. I will always have a dear spot in my heart for the Dead Community as they helped my son get diagnosed through the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
I recently challenged a local ordinance in the court system and am awaiting to win that case to for small business owners in Windham County.
I look at laws and policies and see how they can better serve our people of Windham County. My goal is to help the small business owner to thrive and it is my honor to show you through direct policy that laws can be changed.
I am very excited to have been a part of the PATH State of Vermont Advisory Council for Windham County for years under the direction of John Swartz. We made policy changes at the very basic level in customer service under these welfare related areas.
I enjoyed working as a Board of Director for the community television station and had the opportunity to be on air and warn our residents to get ready for a major disaster long before IRENE hit on Daryl Pillsbury's show. I am certain that who ever watched that show and got ready, was ready as I was for IRENE. This public service announcement allowed for people to realize that we are not immune to disasters and being ready is a key to our emergency preparedness.
I have served as a member of the mandated reporters when I was working within the educational system and was fortunate to work with a student who was uncovered as a schizophrenic due to an early diagnosed trauma that was undetected through the normal testing procedures and advocated for this unique child to be given the necessary tools to thrive in the future. It was one of the most significant life experiences that I had ever been privy to and its was also one of the most baffling to realize that a student can go undiagnosed with a serious mental illness while going to public school. This was no accident. I was there to make sure that that child got the necessary treatment needed.
I like to ask a lot of questions. I want to know the root of why procedures are being done when they could be done with cost saving measures in a different way.
I have over 30 years experience working in Windham County. I have worked side by side, inside of the Entergy Nuclear Plant which was a privileged that few people have. I also have worked with giants PEAK Resorts, within the school systems of both Leland and Gray and Brattleboro Union High School. I saw how the educational system works and I saw how it fails many students and I would like to bring that experience to the Senate.
